Cover-up tattoos: Which styles are suitable?

A cover-up is a tattoo placed over an existing one to conceal the old design and give the skin a completely new look. This can mean enhancing the old tattoo or creating an entirely new design over it.

A cover-up tattoo is usually larger and darker so the previous tattoo does not show through. If the original tattoo is very dark, it may first need to be lightened with laser treatment to give the tattoo artist more flexibility. In general, the smaller and lighter the old tattoo is, the easier it is to cover.

During a cover-up, the lines of the new design are integrated with the existing tattoo so the old motif becomes far less noticeable. The focus is often placed on areas of untouched skin, as this is where the eye naturally goes first. Highly detailed styles such as watercolor or dotwork are usually less suitable for cover-ups. Styles like biomechanical or tribal, which use larger areas of black ink, are often more effective.
